About This Calculator

Our free Ideal Weight Calculator estimates the healthiest weight range for your height and gender using the Robinson formula, one of several clinically referenced ideal-body-weight equations. Enter your height and select your gender to see a target weight that is associated with the lowest health risks according to population studies. Use it as a reference point when setting fitness goals, planning a diet, or discussing weight management with your doctor. Remember that ideal weight is a guideline — individual factors like muscle mass, bone density, age, and body composition also play an important role.

How It Works

The Robinson formula calculates ideal weight as follows: for men, 52 kg + 1.9 kg for each inch over 5 feet; for women, 49 kg + 1.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet. The calculator converts your height to inches, applies the formula, and presents the result in both kilograms and pounds. The output is a single target value — your actual healthy range may be roughly plus or minus 10%, depending on body frame and composition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ideal body weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is a clinically estimated weight associated with the lowest risk of weight-related diseases for a given height and gender. It was originally developed for drug dosage calculations and life-insurance risk tables. Several formulas exist (Robinson, Devine, Hamwi, Miller) — each gives slightly different results but all fall within a similar range.

Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?

Not exactly. Ideal weight is a formula-based estimate, while healthy weight is a broader range (typically a BMI of 18.5-24.9). Someone who is athletic and muscular may weigh more than their "ideal" weight and still be perfectly healthy. Use IBW as one data point alongside BMI, body-fat percentage, and a doctor's assessment.

What if I am significantly above or below the ideal weight?

Being moderately outside the range is not necessarily unhealthy — body composition matters more than the number on the scale. However, if you are significantly above or below, it is worth discussing with a healthcare provider to rule out underlying issues and create a safe plan for reaching a healthier weight.

Why does gender affect ideal weight?

On average, men carry more lean muscle mass and have a larger skeletal frame than women of the same height, which means their estimated ideal weight is higher. The formulas account for this population-level difference.

Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?

No single formula is definitively "best." The Robinson formula (used here) is widely cited in medical literature. The Devine formula is common in pharmacology. For the most accurate assessment, combine the formula result with your BMI, body-fat percentage, and a conversation with your doctor.
