About This Calculator
Our free GPA Calculator computes your Grade Point Average on the standard 4.0 scale used by most US colleges and universities. Add each course with its credit hours and letter grade, and the tool instantly produces your weighted GPA. Use it to track your semester GPA, plan how future grades will affect your cumulative GPA, determine if you meet the minimum GPA for scholarships, graduate programs, or honors, and set academic goals. The calculator supports A through F letter grades including plus and minus variations (A+, A, A-, B+, etc.).
How It Works
For each course you enter, the calculator converts the letter grade to a grade-point value (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0.0) and multiplies it by the course's credit hours to produce quality points. It then sums all quality points and divides by the total credit hours to get your weighted GPA. A 3-credit A (12 quality points) counts three times as much as a 1-credit A (4 quality points), ensuring heavier courses carry more weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is GPA and how is it calculated?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a weighted average of your grades. Each letter grade has a point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0). Multiply each grade point by its credit hours, sum the results, and divide by total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 4-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit course gives (16 + 9) / 7 = 3.57 GPA.
What is considered a good GPA?
This depends on your goals. For Dean's List or honors, most institutions require 3.5 or above. Competitive graduate programs often look for 3.3+. For employment, many companies use 3.0 as a screening cutoff. A 3.7-4.0 is considered excellent across almost all contexts.
How do plus and minus grades affect GPA?
Plus and minus grades add or subtract roughly 0.3 from the base grade point. An A- is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3, a B- is 2.7, etc. This makes the GPA scale more granular. Whether your school uses plus/minus grading depends on institutional policy — check your registrar.
Can I calculate my cumulative GPA across multiple semesters?
Yes. Enter all courses from all semesters and the calculator will produce your overall cumulative GPA. You can also calculate a single semester to see how it affects your running average.
How can I raise my GPA?
Focus on high-credit courses where improvement has the biggest impact. Retake courses with low grades if your school allows grade replacement. Earn As in remaining courses. Use this calculator to model "what if" scenarios — enter projected grades for future courses to see how they would change your GPA.
